I think we might be able to do it based on what I've seen so far. I'm playing around with it now in Cursor.
What do you use currently for coding? IDE/model etc? I used to use
Copilot until they switched up their pricing model so switched to Cursor and even with the cheaper Cursor agent (Componser 2.5) it's done a
really good job.
After reading your message I'm doing a quick POC on viewing (not editing yet) for the *.dat files.
So it does look doable. I spent just a little bit of time with the quick POC and can view the data file contents. With that I can probably update it to write contents, you can add other tools for scanning, etc.
I have a side project for BBSing (several at the same time so the one
I'm about to mention hasn't gotten any love in a while) called Mystic Manager which has all the tools I wish Mystic had out of the box. Things like Theme editors, color editors, etc (since I can't get Mystics global color theme settings to work, and hand updating them is SO tedious), a prompt editor to edit prompts (since there are so many of them, trying
to edit them in the UI is torture).
I created a "Tool" for data file management, which now just has the ability to view data files, but wanted to try it out for you since I was already at the keyboard. Anyways, here's a screenshot of it:

I'm on linux - but should work the same... lemme know if you build something that could help; I think I'd prefer to do it myself b/c I'm super protective of 2oFB - but I can beta test anything before using it live here... :P

I'm the exact same way and prefer to just write my own mods/tools :)
So sounds good, it was more of a POC on my end and not sure when I'll
get back to it since I have other projects higher up in the list. So,
yes for sure have at it with Claude! Definitely looks doable.
What I drastically need for Mystic would be a File/Message System Editor.
A tool that could read our various ./mystic/data files, or other Mystic files, and allow a sysop to mass-edit File/Message Conferences/Areas down to every minuet detail. For example, I would love to re-arrange my Conferences/Areas FILES... right now various File Areas are located on different disks;
/mnt/BackupA/some/path/to/file/area
/mnt/BackupB/some/path/to/file/area
... etc etc etc.
I'm dealing with thousands of File Areas, so editing by hand isn't really an option at this point - so I'm just stuck will all my data spun around
