Everything works fine now. So I added a cron job for backing up my Mystic instance twice a day, and synchronized these backups on my local server. It's better to be safe than sorry. ;)

However, if I compare the number of messages today with those from 6, 7, or 8 years ago (my first BBS), there are significant differences. Besides, Usenet doesn't exist here anymore either?

It would be nice if I could add more diverse and active networks.

Since I don't want to run the BBS just for myself, participating in a network as a point is probably out of the question.

Are there still options for that today?

Of course it does. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it
doesn't exist (except for God, that doesn't exist) ;)

If you want to login to my BBS and then let me know, I can give you
access to my usenet server.

I also have a way for Synchronet sysops to allow their users to
authenticate using their BBS account. If you want to offer usenet
services to your users, maybe we can figure a way to get it working for
Mystic.

Or you could just come over to Synchronet :)

It does - a few nodes provide usenet - I'm sure they'll popup up and let you know.

There arent many - fsxnet is probably one of the bigger ones though.

The only difference between a point and a normal node, is that a point is not listed in the nodelist for the network.

Points, otherwise, can interact the same was as other nodes can.

Node owners cannot run for fidonet positions and I believe have no voting rights. Not that most nodes do anyway but still.

It may have been the policy of the networks you were on rather than a
technical limitation. I used to be on networks that didn't allow points
at all.

I think these days points are most useful if you have an actual node for
your bbs, then if you want to experiment with other bbses, or perhaps
have a ftn reading setup, you can do that with points off of your bbs,
you couldn't do that with your main bbs being a point (ie, points off
points)

I have used a point on fsxnet for a while before coming back because I
was hesitent to bother Paul to set me up a new node if I didn't stay very
long. Though, I'm not worried about bothering deon :) deon can set up
nodes easy with clrghouz :D

That may have been the case.

Since I gave up my last BBS (also Mystic) many years ago for personal
reasons, it took me a while to get back into it.

Additionally, there were also some changes.

All in all, I'm quite pleased that after less than a week, my BBS is running (almost) exactly as I imagined.
