• Hello from Herbies-BBS

From Thorsten Herb@21:3/262.1 to Alle on Thu Oct 15 21:40:00 2026
    Hi everyone,

a friendly hello from Weil am Rhein in the south-west corner of
Germany, right where Germany, France and Switzerland meet.

Some may remember the name: Herbies-BBS II (Mystic) was part of
fsxNet as node 21:4/104 from late 2017 on, until it went quiet and
was delisted. Over the last weeks all systems have been updated, the
old configuration cleaned up and quite a few errors fixed - and
Herbies-BBS III is now back as node 21:3/262.

A special hello and thank you to Avon for running fsxNet, and to
Deon and everyone involved for the warm welcome and the smooth setup.

Since today, Herbies-BBS III (Synchronet) also takes part in
InterBBS Last Callers: its callers are posted to FSX_DAT, and its
users can see who has been calling the other boards, too. Many thanks
to codefenix for the Synchronet version and to xqtr for the original
    idea on Mystic.

One question to the experts: the Mystic board (Herbies-BBS II) now
runs as a point (21:3/262.200) behind the Synchronet node. Is it okay
for a point system to post its own callers to FSX_DAT as well, or
should InterBBS Last Callers be limited to listed nodes?

About the system: Herbies-BBS is a small hobby system with three
    boards running side by side:

    - Herbies-BBS III Synchronet
    - Herbies-BBS II Mystic
    - Herbies-BBS ProBoard 2.30 (DOS)

All three carry fsxNet and FidoNet, Synchronet also DOVE-Net, and the
file areas hold a fair amount of old DOS and BBS software.

Visitors are always welcome at herbies-bbs.ddns.net - and any hints
on what could be done better are much appreciated.

    Greetings from the Rhine,
    Herbie

    Good to see you online.

While I'm no expert in the oneliners, I dont see a problem with your points posting in FSX_DAT as well...

A point should not have callers. It's supposed to be for a single user to read/write mail offline.

If you have a BBS that is taking callers, it should have its own node number with the relevant network(s).

Welcome back! I think I joined fsxNet sometime in between. =)

Nice to see that there are so many SysOps and boards and users still around!

    Best regards

If you have a BBS that is taking callers, it should have its own node number with the relevant network(s).

That sort of depends on the network. Some NCs want any system that
doesn't accept incoming mail traffic 24/7 to be a point, regardless of
whether or not the system takes callers.

Others define it as you have, based on callers.

Avon doesn't seem too strict either way.

Not sure how you'd not accept mail but accept callers? I don't think
any othernets recognize zone mail hour, although it'd be a nice retro
touch if someone did set up an old BBS system that supported it.

I loved Opus CBCS, hated storing each message as a separate file. :(

I believe it came up in terms of systems that are not online 24/7 for either mail or callers, i.e. part-time systems or ones that are offline a lot for other reasons. Also, being a hub I have learned that there are some systems (misconfigured or otherwise) that are perfectly capable of making outbound mail calls but don't have a reachable mailer up.

I loved Opus CBCS, hated storing each message as a separate
    file. :(

I have vague memories of it. ;)

It was pretty interesting - had a mailer built-in. I don't think it
handled continuous mail, but instead you'd set up Zone Mail Hour and
only allow mail calls at that time.

All text config files, too - which I liked.

That was one of the things I always liked about GT Power. All of the config files were text.
