• Turnaround trip

From Matthew Munson@21:4/108 to All on Sun Oct 4 17:19:30 2026
Next Monday and Tuesday I'll be doing a Seattle WA trip to see Rush. The only things to worry about is finding some place that is not too expensive near Climate Pledge arena to have lunch or dinner and for me to see 1 or 2 sights before I go back to my hometown in California. At least I can check off that I visited Washington State. ... This tagline is umop apisdn

Heh.. over here we just moved to daylight savings hours a week or so ago... the weather is still springlike but hopefully soon the temps will warm up a bit... still based on what I have seen in the UK we don't want too warmer temps ;)

    Hey...

That pesky daylight savings. I think it is a consipiracy orchestrated by the car insurance companies, due to the higher number of tiredness bingles in the weeks following the clock change. Possibly the clock / battery companies are onto it too, due to general confusion on why the clock is suddenly one hour wrong. They can't fool us!

In the USA, it is the golfing lobby that keep it going... more daylight
for people to spend money playing... and to some extent the beer and liquor lobby... more time after work for people to party and drink.

The golfing industry is also one of the lobbys trying to get it instituted year-round in the USA. It is no coincidence that the most vocal political advocate is a known lover of the game. ;)

The reason the USA extended DST into Novemeber was the candy lobby, who
thought that more daylight on Halloween would mean more money. From what I have heard, they have made a bundle off of the extension as October candy
    sales did indeed go up.

I hadn't heard that Big Golf was behind DST, but I suppose it makes
sense. Don't know about the liquor lobby, don't think daylight (or lack
thereof) was a criteria when I was drinking...

That would explain why people have floated keeping DST around and
keeping us on DST year-round instead of going to standard time and not
switching. adoptiong DST year round doesn't make sense at all.

(aside: I have an annoying vendor I'm having to deal with - one of the
"let's meet every week because I can't track project effort unless I
get everyone on a call.". She's trying to manage 2 hours a week across
several busy schedules and several time zones. I gave her my
availability in PDT, my time zone. She somehow translated that to PST
and scheduled a meeting one hour earlier then tried to play the
"Everyone is availale on our end at this time" angle. I'm your
    customer, so no.)

Exactly, makes no sense. It was tried as a test before and went over so badly it was cancelled before it officially ended.

I had similar issues except they were with people who lived and worked in the same area -- and in the same office -- that I did. Not sure what time zone they were trying to live on but they were good at coming in a hour+ later than everyone else, and then setting up lots of meetings after everyone else's quitting time. After showing up to empty conference rooms a few times, it didn't take them long to learn they couldn't do that.

Best as I can tell, those are the types of people who think year-round DST is a good idea, too. :D

    Oh, that's annoying.

I'm in an odd situation where my company bought a company on Eastern
time, and we're heavy into separating them from the parent company.
Most of the vendors are on EDT/CDT and schedule meetings on their time.
Which means, 7am or noon my time.

I just spent 4 years working with a boss on Eastern time who worked
7:30am-4:30am out of personal preference - which was 4:30am-1:30pm my
    time! Made working together challenging.

Add to that a North America HQ in Central Time and a headquarters in
Paris, both of which were insensitive to remote office time zones and
you have a lot of midnight, 4am and 7am meetings. Thankfully I worked
from home for most of that and could roll out of bed off-camera for
    those meetings.
