I've tried people and AI for recommendations for games. Both have made me decide to give up and spend my time elsewhere. I won't play anything with cards, strategy, puzzles, reflexes required, must be easy, but
still really fun. No parodies. I must be able to save the game every 10-15 minutes. Nothing meets all of those categories...

What types of games, or games in particular have you played in the past that you really enjoyed, and what aspects of them did you like? I wonder if finding games similar to them in those regards might be something we could help with.

I think there are still some games that were only available for the PS1 that weren't available for the PC. But if you have a PC, you can run a PS1 emulator to play them. :)

Yes, ever since Bleem in 1999 :).

I remember buying a copy of Bleem when it was available in stores. And I heard Sony sued the company that made Bleem, so they had to stop selling it. I also remember another PS1 emulator called Connectix Virtual Game Station.. These days there are other PS1 emulators available (and they're free). I thought Bleem was cool though because it attempted to improve the graphics of the PS1 games in real-time.

Oh, you're right. The Wii and Gamecube. For some reason I thought it emulated other systems too.

I'd like to play Zelda Windwaker on it, I liked

All the retro games, fill these categories. Setup a Retropie machine, use a Bazzite or Batocera live image and play games up to the PS2 (you can more) era. Specially the Arcade games, are very fun for short time periods.

You can save/restore the games, at any time!

You can even buy a cheap chinese handheld device, like the RG35xxx devices and play whenever you have the time.

Present time games are very time consuming and i don't enjoy them, also.

Who needs a PS1 when you have the PC.

Are you trying to start a fight? Because back in the days those were fighting words.

Truth to be told PCs used to be more advanced but consoles used to be more convenient and affordable. If you already had a computer the main reason to pick a console would be to play exclusives, frankly. Back in the day, another reason for using a console if you had a PC was that consoles were more convenient for couch gaming.

These days you can do couch gaming with a PC and a good gamepad. With the raising prices of consoles there is much less of a reason to own a console if you have a mid-end PC.

    I tend to agree.

Particularly, popular modern games require hardware which is too expensive, which turns them into an expensive proposition to begin with. Then they might be subject to a lot of modern plagues such as microtransactions, online DRM and so on.

However, I must stress that there are many modern low budget titles that are very respectful of your time. I am talking about 5 to 15 USD games with no microtransactions that you can run on a toaster. Lots of those actively attempt to replicate the virtues of old hits. For example you have BallisticNG, which comes across as a modern WipeOut; or Wizordum, which feels like a spiritual succesor to Heretic.

If you dig deep enough you can find lots of modern releases for retro systems. Lots of very good stuff is still being released for the Game Boy, ZX Spectrum, or the Genesis/Mega Drive.

If you are really retro you should give Bufonada a try. Nothing like a good Spectrum game released on 2023 to show there are still people who care XD

honestly, hindsight is awesome.. especially if you can resist keeping up with gaming for long periods of time.

i tend to play tons of games maybe 7-10 years late.. you end up knowing pretty much every game that is either awesome "game of the year" stuff or total crap. never purchased any bad PS1 games. most of them for maybe $10-20 from the used section.

also for the PC side you end up a couple generations newer for CPU/GPUs so they all run 1440p >100fps, etc

Yeah, for me, I don't plan to upgrade for a while, but my current PCs are fine for me. My current main desktop PC is one I built in 2019 with an Intel i9-9900k, and I've upgraded a few things since then. I had 32GB of RAM in it, and I decided to upgrade to 64GB RAM around October 2024, which seems to be right before RAM prices went up sky high, so I think that was good timing. I had also upgraded my BBS PC to 64GB RAM a bit before that.. In my main PC, I'm using a graphics card I bought in April 2022, which was a bit expensive at the time, but I figured I'd be using it a lot (which I have). That's still my current setup today, and it's still working fine for me.

2000 was the first game that introduced me to the series. I really enjoyed it on my DOS machine. IIRC, 3000 requires Windows. A lot of people didn't enjoy it as much as 2000 but I did.

I later got into the original -- by then, renamed "Classic" -- and enjoy it also.

I have 4 but have not yet gotten into it. It has a lot of new stuff added. The graphics seem like an update from 3000 but some of the additional stuff in 3000 that people didn't like doesn't appear to be there. The UI is much different and IMHO more difficult to get used to. It is the one that introduced the concept of neighboring cities that IIRC are actually playable.

My opinion of it after some brief play attempts is that the over-complicated it. I would rather have seen a "2500" or "3500" that introduced playable neighbor cities but didn't introduce so many other things and changes. May play a lot better on more powerful equipment (i.e. the minimum requirements may have been seriously understated!).

The SimCity games were some of my favorite PC games, though I didn't play
much beyond SimCity 2000. I bought SimCity 2000 (for DOS) when it was new

2000 was the first game that introduced me to the series. I really enjoyed it on my DOS machine. IIRC, 3000 requires Windows. A lot of people didn't enjoy it as much as 2000 but I did.

Yeah, I think I was one that didn't seem to enjoy 3000 as much as 2000. I didn't really play 3000 a whole lot though. I think I had played 2000 so much that I was just used to it, too, but 2000 seemed to have a good balance of features.

Years ago (around 2009 maybe?), I saw that there was a 32-bit version of SimCity 2000 for Windows, though it had a 16-bit installer, basically preventing you from installing it on modern versions of Windows. I extracted the files and found out what registry settings needed to be added, and I created my own 32-bit installer for it using NullSoft Install System.. I might still have that installer around here somewhere. I think other people have done the same.

I later got into the original -- by then, renamed "Classic" -- and enjoy it also.

I had played the original before 2000 came out. I remember one Saturday in 1993 or so, soon before 2000 came out, and I spent about 4 hours playing the original SimCity.. It was one of those things where I didn't really pay attention to the time and didn't realize 4 hours had gone by. I started at 10:00AM and then it was 2:00PM, and I decided to do something else for a while. :)

I have 4 but have not yet gotten into it. It has a lot of new stuff added. The graphics seem like an update from 3000 but some of the additional stuff in 3000 that people didn't like doesn't appear to be there.

Maybe I'll give one of the newer SimCity games a try some time.

Yeah, I have not ever played the most recent one. That was one of the big complaints I remember... that it required a constant/consistent internet connection in order to play it.

i tend to play tons of games maybe 7-10 years late.. you end up knowing pretty much every game that is either awesome "game of the year" stuff or total crap. never purchased any bad PS1 games. most of them for maybe

Asking this because I'm not a gamer...

Is there some place or way to easily find a list of curated/popular old games with what kind of hardware is required for them? Like, maybe a list of games that don't require any GPU, then a list of games that only need older GPU, etc... all that don't suck? :).

If there isn't such a thing... maybe someone should put one together ;).

the Celeron I ran it on in 2004, but it's hard finding multiplayer
    games with players.

Yeah it is. It's awesome that I can run Doom and Unreal Tournament or whatever on my supershitty AMD A6 laptop (proc nobody's ever heard of), but most of the time nobody is on the servers I can connect to.
