Actually, it was brought up because this started out as a Synchronet only network. So while many things may work for Synchronet and Synchronet's NNTP service out of the box, it may not with Mystic, which then is where I went into the next paragraph.

Yep. To try and give an idea as to why it may not work for him, or you, I suppose. James started supporting QWK networking with Mystic, and then, IIRC asked DM if he would allow Mystic systems to connect to Dovenet (maybe even warning of possible issues that might crop up).
Some of these settings on VERT for QWK nodes to configure may even have been added /because/ of Mystic.
