But yeah, most of the time you leave the drive plugged it, it should be fine.

One of the nicer things I tripped over a while back was a USB Hub that
has 4 ports on it, and each port has its own power switch so I can boot
and then just switch on whatever I want to access, which doesn't help
if you need that USB device as it's booting up.
I have a mouse and keyboard attached to that, and those stay on.
It's just a backup storage Flash drive that I use the switch on
at the moment.
(I use a full sized monitor, keyboard, etc. on my Laptop when
using it at home.)
That said I have had very few issues with USB connections, and I
use them on a newer computer as well that doesn't have any old
type USB ports, so I'm adapting between older and newer USB formats.
